Post-GLP-1 Weight Loss Aesthetic Concerns: “Ozempic Face” & “Ozempic Body” Explained (And How to Avoid Them)

Aesthetic concerns can arise after losing a significant amount of weight, especially with the use of GLP-1 drugs. These concerns can include hollowing of the face, sagging skin, volume loss, skin laxity, hair thinning or loss, and dull skin tone. Avoiding these complications by focusing on gradual weight loss, maintaining a balanced diet with enough hydration and regular exercise.

GLP-1 is a chemical name for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite. It’s widely used by medical professionals for weight loss nowadays.

The most famous brand name is Ozempic. We have heard the terms “Ozempic Face” and “Ozempic Body” used to refer to patients who are taking or jumping on similar drugs. They have lost tremendous weight, which gives them a certain look and a certain type of skin.

For example, those who have lost a lot of weight with these GLP-1 often have what we call hollowing of the face, with sagging, volume loss, looking older and more aged, skin laxity, dull skin tone, hair thinning, and hair loss.

How to avoid or minimise these concerns

When you lose a substantial amount of weight over a period of time, you lose not only fat volume, but muscle and other tissue as well. It’ll be reflected in your body, on your face, and in your skin complexion.

To avoid these complications, I would advise patients on GLP-1s, as well as those embarking on a weight-loss journey, to focus on gradual weight loss.

Do not lose too much weight over a short period of time because, by doing so, your body will be unable to maintain equilibrium, and much of the weight loss will come not only from fat but also from your muscles and tissues.

So slow the pace down; lose maybe 1 to 2 kilos a week over a longer period. Not only will it make you look a little healthier, but it will also make your body better able to tolerate it.

Diet & Hydration

Prioritise your diet, such as protein and nutrition. Ingest more protein so that your body will be able to use it for building or preserving muscle mass. Maintain hydration for skin velocity and barrier function.

Muscle preservation

Make sure you do have adequate exercise, especially strength training. Using resistance training 2 to 3 times a week helps maintain muscle mass, reducing a deflated look, particularly in the face and body.

Optimised skincare routine

Include sunscreen, collagen stimulators, and hyaluronic acid to help maintain your skin’s vitality, hydration, and complexion.

Consider preventive or proactive measures

Rejuvenating treatments like bio stimulators, fillers, radiofrequency, and lasers, performed by your doctors.

Body contouring surgery

One interesting thing is that you can gain or lose weight, but it’s very difficult for you to control and shape your body in stubborn areas, such as those with double pads on a saddlebag. A surgery such as liposuction can help improve or change disproportionate contours and loose skin, and even uneven fat pouches after weight loss can be managed.
