Does the Number of Incisions Matter in Liposuction? Here’s an Honest Answer

This is an interesting topic that I have recently been asked about a lot.

Patients often ask:

  • how many sessions a patient will need
  • the size of the incisions
  • whether they will leave scars

Minimising scars is a shared goal between patients and doctors, as the procedure aims to enhance appearance.

Liposuction is a procedure aimed at improving a patient’s appearance, and the prospect of scars post-op is something we all want to avoid.

So, how can we, as doctors, minimise this?

Firstly, we aim to make scars or incisions as small as possible. Incisions typically range from 0.3 cm to 1 cm; I prefer 0.3-0.5 cm incisions placed in discreet areas, such as creases or folds, to reduce visibility. Even initially dark scars can become less noticeable over time.

Charging patients based on the number of incisions is highly dubious, and in my opinion, unethical.

Incision placement heavily influences the outcome for natural-looking results with high patient satisfaction. It should be tailored to each patient’s body shape to achieve the best contouring.

While the number of incisions is important, we also strive to minimise them. The more incisions there are, the harder they are to conceal.

There is no fixed number of incisions for every case.

Patients should know that the cost of liposuction should not depend on the number of incisions made during the procedure.
