Understanding acne causes and its treatments in Singapore

Listen to the podcast to understand the medications, topical treatments, and aesthetic procedures that doctors typically recommend in Singapore for acne treatment from both the skin surface and beneath the skin.

Acne and pimples are common problems in Singapore – 88% of teenagers and adults experience acne in Singapore –  especially in our hot and humid weather, which causes oily skin. What is the difference between acne and pimples? Acne is a broader medical term, while pimples is just a layman term.

Two types of acne

The two main types are non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory acne. Non-inflammatory acne includes comedones, which are either whiteheads (closed pores) or blackheads (open pores that have oxidized).

When blackheads become inflamed, they turn into inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne includes papules and pustules (smaller types) as well as nodules and cysts (larger types). Nodules and cysts can cause more scarring than smaller types when they heal.

3 causes of acne

Acne can be caused by several factors.

  1. First, buildup of dead skin cells can block pores, leading to oil accumulation and inflammation.
  2. Second, bacteria on the skin thrive on oily skin, increasing the chance of inflammation.
  3. Third, overactive sebaceous glands produce excess oil, which can block pores and lead to bacterial growth. These three factors are the main causes of acne.

Understanding these causes helps in treatment.
