Gynecomastia can have significant psychological effects on patients, leading to symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and lack of confidence. Listen to my podcast for real patient stories.
For patients suffering from gynecomastia, the psychological effects are the most important factors that affect them and the reason they seek medical treatment. I often ask my patients, “How much do you think this condition affects you on a scale of 1 to 10?” Most of the patients I see in a clinic will give me a rating between 6 and 9, and anything above five is quite significant in how it impacts their lives.
Some affected patients often experience symptoms such as depression, anxiety, lack of confidence, and more. Additional symptoms include low libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, and weight gain. Mood changes may be due to hormonal imbalances, such as low testosterone levels or elevated estrogen.
Listen to the podcast as I share some stories that I’ve heard from patients suffering from gynecomastia. One common experience is that they become very self-aware of their enlarged breasts. It affects how they perceive themselves, what kind of clothing they purchase and wear, what activities they will or will not engage in, and so on.
