Myths Debunked on Using Household Items For Acne Treatments

Growing up in the ’70s, I often see my neighbours and friends applying all sorts of remedies and old wives tales of “acne reduction” treatments using household products.

Today, if you do a search online, there are too many articles that promote products that claim to be able to get rid of acne in 5 minutes, using lemon juice to lighten dark spots and pigmentation, and so on. So what works and what doesn’t?

Here’s the truth, according to science.

Can you get rid of a pimple in 5 minutes?
You can’t. But big inflamed pimples that do not resolve by 1-2 weeks can be treated and resolved within days by doctors.

How do you get rid of a popped pimple fast?
You can use specialised antibiotic acne lotion to help it recover faster.

Can Vaseline be used as a face moisturiser?
Not on the entire face. For people with dry skin that do not improve with water-based moisturisers, Vaseline can be used on specific spots such as lips or dry facial patches.

Will Vaseline clog my pores?
Not likely

Can you use bottled lemon juice for dark spots?
It is believed that vitamin C can help to improve pigmentation. Vitamin C serum that we used for pigmentation is pure and concentrated, unlike bottled lemon juice.
